Nellie Bly was the pen name of Elizabeth Jane Cochrane who became a well-known investigative reporter in the late 1800’s, unheard of for a woman at that time. To get a job as a reporter with the New York World she succeeded in getting herself committed for 10 days to the infamous lunatic asylum known as Blackwell’s Island in New York, with no guarantee of her release.  Her subsequent newspaper series on the conditions and treatment o the institutional women let to public outrage and improvements in the care for the mentally ill.

JoAnn comes to the Museum from the West Virginia Humanities Council’s History Alive! Program. This event is free and open to the public.
