Discovering Laurel Hollow Park: A Century of Charm in Newell, WV

In the quaint town of Newell, WV, Laurel Hollow Park has been a cherished local landmark for over a century. Tucked off the main street, you might not even know that this hidden gem exists! Originally developed a hundred years ago, this small and scenic park was once the home of the Newell Zoo. Although the zoo is now a distant memory, Laurel Hollow Park’s charm remains unmatched.

Back in the early 1900s, George Washington Clarke, the leading salesman for Homer Laughlin China Company, invested his own funds to transform the park for the community. His vision brought to life a space that included a lake, outdoor theatre, walking paths, lush gardens, and a grand fountain. The zoo area once featured a bear pit, where polar bears roamed, along with monkeys, trained raccoons, seals, and deer. The park was a lively hub, drawing crowds for theatrical plays, concerts, and movie screenings.

Over the years, the park has been known by several names: Newell Park, Laurel Park, Laurel Hollow Park, and Newell Zoo. Today, it is officially called Laurel Hollow Park, though you might come across references to its former labels. You can still find the eight-petal daisy motifs on pillars that have been around since the park’s beginning.

Since 2008, the Newell Community Improvement Coalition has been dedicated to revitalizing and preserving this beloved space. Their efforts have breathed new life into the park. Now, a variety of events are hosted in the park throughout the year so that everyone is still able to enjoy the beautiful space. During the summer months, visitors can enjoy plenty of family-friendly activities, including concerts at the outdoor amphitheater (where the bear den once stood) with the backdrop of the bear cave.

Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in the park’s rich history or simply spend a relaxing day in its scenic surroundings, Laurel Hollow Park offers something for everyone.
