An Unexpected Retreat: The Barn with Inn

While a renovated barn loft might not be the first place that comes to mind when you imagine a relaxing retreat, the Barn With Inn has become one of the best spots for an escape to West Virginia. Located on a working farm in the hills of Wellsburg, the rooms on this 36-acre retreat are anything but rustic.

In the renovated barn, visitors can choose to stay in the barn loft or stall. If you weren’t greeted by the hodgepodge family of animals upon your arrival, you’d never know these cozy, fully furnished rooms were part of the same structure that houses these friendly creatures. The functional part of the barn is fully sealed off from the lodgings, but you won’t be able to resist visiting with the chickens, goats, donkeys, pot-bellied pig, or Beauford (the lovable Scottish Highland Cow) during your stay. Guests also stay in the colonial farmhouse room located in the main house, or in warmer months, the airstream that overlooks the gardens and pond. With amenities like a firepit, walking paths, gardens, and a heated saltwater pool, you’re sure to have a relaxing stay.

Hosts Chatman and Harry make guests feel right at home the minute they arrive with their gracious hospitality. As a true B&B, Chatman cooks a delicious breakfast each morning using locally sourced ingredients and eggs from the farm. The hosts also have regular farm-to-table community dinners with food prepared by chef Brian Magliochette, who educates diners about each course.

With a network of repeat guests, it can be tricky to find an opening at the Barn. Be sure to plan your stay far in advance, because this retreat isn’t a secret any longer. Private dinners, business meetings, retreats, holiday parties, and small weddings are also available to book. People who are looking for an authentic experience know that the Barn With Inn is a top pick in West Virginia.
